The Aged Care Act 2024

The Australian Government introduced the new Aged Care Act on 1 November 2025. This new legislation represents an important step forward in enhancing the quality of aged care across Australia.
At its heart, the new Act is about respect, dignity, and quality of life – ensuring every older Australian receiving government-funded aged care is truly valued and supported.
Alongside the Act, the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards commenced on 1 November 2025, guiding all aged care providers to deliver person-centred, high-quality care and to continually strive for best practice.
The new Aged Care Act introduces a Statement of Rights, which replaces the current Charter of Rights. It clearly outlines what every older Australian can expect when receiving government-funded aged care services.
Most importantly, it reinforces that you and your needs are always at the centre of care — that you are treated with dignity, respect, and compassion, and supported to live the life you choose.
You’ll find the Statement of Rights poster displayed in all CraigCare residential aged care homes as a visible reminder of our ongoing commitment to provide care that truly honours and values every person.
The new Aged Care Act recognises that every older person has the right and ability to make their own decisions about their care and wellbeing.
From 1 November 2025, anyone currently listed as an authorised or regular representative in My Aged Care will automatically become the person’s registered supporter, unless they choose to opt out.
This change is designed to make it easier for older people to have trusted supporters involved in their care decisions, while still keeping their voice and choices at the centre of everything.
